There may indeed be a thin line between love and hate, but what would cause a jilted ex-boyfriend to stab a woman he loved 13 times while she is sick??? In a disturbing case of domestic violence, Traci Mattox was a victim of such an attack while she was a patient at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California.
Mattox had been admitted for treatment of her ulcers. She was awakened by her ex, Lorenzo Moss, 30, at around 2:40 a.m. She had already sent him away the day before because the couple had just broken up.
Mattox thought it best that they part ways but apparently Moss wasn't taking the news so well. She told him again that the relationship was over and that's when she saw the knife. Moss snapped and stabbed her in the head, ears, neck, hands, and wrist as she fought him off and screamed for help. Sadly, no one came to her rescue.
"He didn’t stop because help came, he stopped because he was tired of fighting,” Mattox told CBS2 News. She then got out of bed to go find help herself while her attacker waltzed right out of the hospital. Moss was only a few blocks away from the hospital when Long Beach police arrested him at 3:20 a.m. He has pleaded not guilty to suspicion of attempted murder and is being held on $1.19 million bail.
Mattox is expected to make a full recovery--at least physically anyway. This altercation could have ended with severe or even fatal injuries. Mattox wants to know, as she should, where the hell security and the nursing staff were while all of this was taking place. "I’m in the hospital, I’m somewhere where I’m supposed to be safe and get well," Mattox said. "Did not think I was gonna be in the hospital and die from someone coming to stab me."
Of course the hospital did issue the standard statement about how safety is their top priority: "The safety of our patients, visitors, and staff is of utmost importance. We respectfully uphold the privacy of our patients and are cooperating with local authorities."
No question that Mattox would disagree. St. Mary's had better come up with some answers fast. If anybody can just walk into a hospital, stab someone 13 times, and then just walk out, then their problem is bigger than just security. Yeah, they should probably go ahead and cut a check for Mattox--and better security.
